Cape Agulhas was rounded by explorer Bartolomeu Dias and his crew in 1488. He could convince his crew to sail a bit further to be sure that this was the way north to reach Asia. He was convinced and in March 1488 he returned his ships back home.
When he came back home, he received no great welcome from his employer King Joao, who only gave him a modest pension for hix discovery. There is no record of a public celebration for this hero of exploration. The reason was that it wasn't sure at that time that Dias discovered somehting substantial. History showed later on that Dias discovered one of the great routes to the East.
