A cycle tour from Atlantic to the Med.

The ride starts at the lighthouse La Coubre (Royan) at the mouth of the Garrone on the Atlantic. We take the ferry to Pointe de Grave and then cycle through the coast side of the Medoc to Arcachon.

The route then goes to Langon and then follows the Gironde and the Canal du Midi to Sete.

To give ample time for seeing the sights we are covering the 517 miles (817km) in 15 stages.

On the return we are taking 2 days to cycle the 82 miles (100km) from Bordeaux to St Palais sur Mer where we are leaving the car..

The route is more or less flat- it should be very easy riding with good food and wine to see us along the way!

We return from Sete to Bordeaux on the TGV ( seats and Bikes tickets booked throgh Rail Europe). The 16.20 from Sete is straight through so no manhandling of the bikes. Arrives at 20.30.

We have chosen to stay the night in Bordeaux and then to cycle through the Medoc region back to Royan.

We found the following Guide books useful even though they are a little out of date:
Guide No1: A velo, le long du canal du Midi.
Guide No2: Bordeaux-Toulouse- a velo, le long du canal de Garonne
