Khao Yai National Park is situated in the western part of the San Kamphaeng Mountain Range, at the southwestern boundary of the Khorat Plateau. The park lies largely in Nakhon Ratchasima Province, but also includes parts of Saraburi, Prachinburi and Nakhon Nayok provinces. The park is the third largest in Thailand covering an area of 2,168 square kilometers. Khao Yai National Park consists of a series of mountains such as Khao Rom, the highest about 1,351 meters, Khao Lam about 1,326 meters, Khao Kiao about 1,292 meters, Khao Sam Yot about 1,142 meters, Khao Far Pha about 1,078 meters, Khao Kampang about 875 meters, Khao Samo Pun about 805 meters and Khao Kaeo about 802 meters above sea level. Moreover, the area has vastly grassy field alternating with productive forest. The north and the east part are smoothly sloping down, while the south and the west part are rising up. The area is the source of five main rivers being the Prachin Buri River, the Nakhon Nayok River, the Lam Ta Kong River, The Pra Plerng River, and the Huai Muang Lek. The park has a diverse plant community, comprised of five main vegetation types: dry evergreen forest, dry deciduous forest, tropical moist evergreen forest, hill evergreen forests and grasslands. Its waterfalls include the Sarika falls and the 80 meters Heo Narok, and Heo Suwat made famous from the film "The Beach". The park was made an ASEAN Heritage Park in 1984, and on 14 July 2005 the park together with other parks in the same range and in the Dong Phaya Yen mountains further north was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site under the name Dong Phaya Yen - Khao Yai Forest Complex.
