In this street, the Karmelietenstraat, Alfred Van der Smissen escaped from the army barracks. Alfred Van der Smissen fought in 1815 at Waterloo at the Dutch side and became a hero. During the independence fight of Belgium in 1830, he was on the Belgian side. In 1841, he was involved in a conspiracy and got condemned, but managed to escape form the prison here and ran to Germany.
