Zuiderhof Cemetery (1957 - 1964)

At the edge of South Hilversum, next to the moors, lies the Zuiderhof cemetery. Dudok designed the cemetery after his retirement, in 1957.

The cemetery is exactly the way Dudok intended it. An air of stillness should surround you; that's why the design was kept somber.

From Kolhornse road, you go up a broad driveway, with a row of trees on each side and in the middle. On the lawn, there is a mourning bench and two weeping katsura trees. On the driveway, there are two entrances. The entrance on the north side is for the public; that on the south is for personnel and mortuary companies.

The whole thing exhales an atmosphere rest and timelessness. During the restoration, entrances were made in the walls of the gallery. This it's possible to walk directly into the cemetery from the front terrace.

The graves lie to the left and right behind the row of trees, divided into sections. The wall niches were added in 1966. If you enter the cemetery via the public entrance, then the columbarium is to the left – a design from 'Yvonne van der Pluijm'. In the woods, urns can be buried or set up.
