THE PAINTER OF THE SEA

Urbano Lugrís (A Coruña, 1908 – Vigo, 1973) was a surrealist painter who used different techniques such as murals, screen printing, collages, or oil, with clear references to the marine world.
Although born in A Coruña, Lugrís forged a special relationship with Malpica, where he made an unforgettable personal and artistic impression.
The trail preserving his memory and legacy in Malpica begins in this square of Anselmo Villar Amigo, a local from Malpica who made his fortune in Buenos Aires and paid for some important works, such as the slipway, the old harbour’s ramp’s big wall, the schools and the market hall, now housing the Town Hall premises. He was also the driving force behind the town’s first water supply system, the fountain that turned this space into a gathering spot for the villagers.
Close by is the Bar Novo, where in 1956, Urbano Lugrís lodged while decorating the Casa do Pescador, something that would forever attach him to the town, its culture, its people and its waters.
He stayed in room 18 for four months, reading and resting after long hours working and chatting to sailors at the taverns, with whom he blended in perfectly thanks to his talkative nature and a few glasses of wine.
