The poet Percy Shelley, Mary Shelley’s husband, drowned in the Bay of La Spezia in 1822. His boat sank during a storm. He sailed from Livorno to Lerici. His body washed ashore on the coast near Viareggio.

Mary Shelly was best known for her novel Frankenstein. Percy Shelley was a famous English poet. They were good friends with Lord Byron and the physician James Lind, who performed experiments with electricity on frogs. That was the inspiration of the novel Frankenstein.
