In the 15th century, it was assumed that Earthly Paradise was a real place on Earth. Toby Lester writes in his marvelous book "The Fourth Part of the World" that an authoritative table of geographical coordinates assigned it at longitude 180 and latitude 0 degrees. This is as far away as geometrically possible from where the west "began".
