Cattigara was a legendary eastern trading center dating back to antiquity and described by Ptolemy. Ptolemy placed it at 8.5 degrees south and 177 degrees west, not far from the Aurea Chersonese. Ptolemy based this location on an account of a voyage by the navigator Alexander. Scholars think that the city of Oce Eo in Vietnam was the Kattigara of Ptolemy. Ptolemy's Kattigara was at eight and a half degrees North of the Equator, and was the forerunner of Saigon.
