On the evening before the 15th of August, there is a big parade in Myrina to celebrate Assumption of Mary (15th of August). What’s peculiar is the mixture between state, army and religion. You will notice that there is still a strong bound between those powers in Greece.
Myrina, located on the west coast, is the capital and main port of Lemnos. It was built around two beautiful bays in the middle of which is a part Byzantine, part Venetian castle. A walk to the top of the castle is an excellent few hours spent—wild deer roam the base of the castle, and the view from the top is amazing. On a clear day, you can see the holy Mount Athos on Halkidiki. The village has varied architecture that reflects its history: Neoclassical mansions next to Ottoman style buildngs and fountains, traditional stone houses and narrow, winding streets. Myrina has many hotels, restaurants, cafes and bars. A spectacular church, Panagia Kokoviotissa is perched above the capital, and nearby is Riha Nera, a prehistoric settlement.
The principal town of the Lemnos and seat of the municipality is Myrina. With its clean, long, and sandy beaches, and its own Castle to boot, Myrina is a big tourist attraction.
