Lemnos airport is an excellent airport, possessing a very long runway, capable of supporting Antonov carriers. The reason for creating such a large airport was not commercial, but had a geopolitical and military reason. Lemnos is located close to the Dardannelles, formerly known as Hellespont, a narrow strait in northwestern Turkey connecting the Aegean Sea to the Sea of Marmara. Remember the big battles taking place there, the last one during World War I at Gallipoli. This battle has also a very strong link with Lemnos because a lot of soldiers were hospitalized here and many battle ships went for anchor in the natural harbour of Lemnos: the bay of Moudros.
The fact that Lemnos has such a big landing strip is also great for commercial reasons. It allows to attract big charter plain from abroad and allow to dump tourists directly on their tourist destination, without a stop-over in Athens.
