Mulberry leaves are the sole food source of the silkworm (Bombyx mori, named after the mulberry genus Morus), the pupa/cocoon of which is used to make silk.
The ripe fruit of the morus, the mulberry, is edible and is widely used in pies, tarts, wines, cordials and tea. Mulberries were also planted for cultivation of silkworms. But also as a great tree for shade because it has such a dense set of leaves.
