Piazza Castelnuovo, together with the adjacent Piazza Ruggero Settimo, forms a single urban space, commonly called Piazza Politeama, thanks to the presence of Teatro Politeama , the city's second most important theater after Teatro Massimo.
The square represents one of the most popular city squares.
In Piazza Castelnuovo there are a structure called “Palchetto della Musica” (work by Salvatore Valenti), the monument to Carlo Cottone (work by Giovan Battista Palazzotto and Domenico Costantino), the sculptures “Nautica” (work by Mario Rutelli), “Lavoro " (work by Benedetto Civiletti) and "Senzatetto" (work by Pasquale Civiletti).
The square is named after Carlo Cottone, Prince of Castelnuovo, one of the proponents of the Sicilian Constitution of 1812.
