The Chapel of the Cross was built in 1632 on the site where, according to legend, two miraculous crucifixes were found in 1317. The masonry pit near the cross chapel indicates the exact place where a certain Baldwin dug up the crosses with the Nine Pounds.
Suddenly, his spade hits a hard object: a cross, and when he pulls it out of the ground, blood flows out of it. Baldwin finds a second cross, two Roman bowls and a spear. As he brings these mysterious objects home, all the bells of the church of Eksaarde spontaneously start ringing.
The Chapel of the Cross and the church of Eksaarde are connected by 14 Stations of the Cross chapels dating from 1877.
