During the second stage of the Wilderness Trail, everything revolves around fascinating panoramic views. Not that these would be shortchanged in the other three stages - here, however, there are particularly beautiful ones, such as the view over the open Dreiborner plateau, which in early summer is illuminated by the radiant yellow of the blooming broom. Or the panoramic views of the Eifel lake plateau. Historical insights are provided by the former NS-Ordensburg Vogelsang. Nature lovers can inform themselves on site in the exhibition "Wilderness Dreams" about the National Park.
The stage runs over a distance of 20 kilometers from Einruhr to Gemünd, passing by extensive waters, fragrant flower meadows, and deep green forests.
Good to know: The stage is signposted with the stylized wildcat symbol. Some altitude meters are climbed and the trail is challenging in places. A good athletic level is a prerequisite.
The tour at a glance
It starts at the National Park information point in Einruhr. Initially, the trail runs along the eastern shore of Obersee to the Urft dam, which at the time of its construction was considered the highest dam in Europe. This is followed by a steeper ascent, which is rewarded on the Dreiborner plateau with fantastic views of the grassland. Always one foot in front of the other, passing by the abandoned village of Wollseifen and the former NS-Ordensburg Vogelsang. Are your feet slowly but surely getting heavy? The two viewpoints Kickley and Modenhübel are suitable for short breaks. Then it goes downhill into the Urft valley and to Gemünd, where the day can end comfortably. Restaurants and cafés along the route can be found in Einruhr, Vogelsang, and Gemünd.
