The name of the borough of Nukerke probably has its origin in 1116, when a new church, popularly known as a 'nuë kerke', was built. The foundation of his own parish in Nukerke dates from before that date.
This church in (neo-)classical style has a sober and austere character. Due to its elevated location, the church can be seen from afar and thus dominates the landscape.
Although the church has a homogeneous appearance, it is the result of several construction phases, the most important periods being 1775-1777 and 1843-1844.
