Grottos are created in the sandstone layer, just below the limestone layer at the top of the cliff. The water could get through to the permeable sandstone layer via cracks in the upper layer. When the water flows out from the sandstone layer at the cliff, it erodes the sand from the sandstone layer and creates these alcoves. When the erosion continues, you can get natural windows as seen further in the valley.
