Mulderplas

The Mulderplas is a small, but surprisingly natural recreational area in the Geleenbeekdal near the hamlet of Thull in the municipality of Beekdaelen. The Mulderplas is a fish pond surrounded by small-scale and species-rich nature.
Here you can walk or cycle in peace along the pond accompanied by herons, frogs and dragonflies. The yellow iris blooms along the side and fishermen enjoy the peace and quiet. The kingfisher skims over the Geleenbeek and wooden decking paths lead you over vulnerable and otherwise impassable nature.
From mud pond to natural monument The current Mulderplas used to look very different. Before the arrival of the South Limburg mines, there was not even a lake and there was a medieval grain mill here.
Around 1960 the State Mines bought this area to turn it into a large mud pond. After the mine closures, this was eventually redeveloped into the current nature reserve. Discover it for yourself and be sure to take a look at and through the time window to dive deeper into the fascinating history of the Mulderplas.
At the Mulderplas you will also find the Muldermolen and the Alfa brewery, one of the few large family breweries in the Netherlands. There is plenty of opportunity here to take a refreshing break after your discovery of this nature reserve…
