Si tratta della torre cittadina del XIV secolo che fa parte del sistema di trasmissione. Costruito dall'Universitas Palermitana per difendere le mura del "Cassaro", non faceva parte delle strutture ecclesiastiche, ma era staccato e isolato.
La Torre dell'Eccellenza, forse la più alta di Palermo , ha perso la sua valenza difensiva a causa dell'espansione urbanistica della città. Poi si è raffinata e ha perso il suo aspetto austero. Al secondo livello, infatti, sono state utilizzate vetrate colorate mediante lavorazioni ad intarsio.
Dal 2013 la Torre di San Nicolò è aperta al pubblico con visite guidate organizzate dalla cooperativa Terradamare.
