L'arrivo nel 1865 del Teatro Politeama, che oggi è la prestigiosa sede della Fondazione Orchestra Sinfonica Siciliana , rese questo luogo un punto di riferimento così importante per la città di Palermo , sia per posizione che per rilievo, tanto che anche le due grandi piazze Piazza Ruggero Settimo e Piazza Castelnuovo sono comunemente chiamate Piazza Politeama.
La piazza rappresenta una delle piazze più frequentate della città. Davanti al famoso teatro si danno appuntamento coppie, amici e soprattutto pattinatori di ogni provenienza.
Nel 1875 la potente famiglia Florio, che aveva la propria villa in Piazza Castelnuovo, fece costruire il Palchetto della musica , destinato a ricevere bande musicali per feste, fiere ed eventi. Ma il vero scopo della costruzione era quello di evitare che piazza Castelnuovo venisse utilizzata come abitazione.
