De vrijheidsboom in Haasdonk werd als lindeboom geplant in 1830 en herinnert de lokale bevolking aan de Belgische Revolutie en de afscheiding het Koninkrijk der Nederlanden. Op dezelfde plek, voor het gemeentehuis, was voordien ook een Franse vrijheidsboom aangepland. Deze vrijheidsboom of -paal stond symbool voor de vrijheid en de democratie van het volk, een teken van een vernieuwde en modernere maatschappij die gevormd was door de ideeën van de Franse revolutie. In 1969 werd de Belgische vrijheidsboom opnieuw vervangen door het huidige exemplaar.
