LAC DE L'ASTARAC

A sensitive natural area, the site, which covers 907 hectares, includes the Astarac lake, the marshy woodlands at its ends and the wooded hillsides above it.

This 180-hectare artificial lake, located in Bézues-Bajon, with a capacity of 10 million m3, was built in 1976 to facilitate the drawing of water for irrigation.

The lake is of great ornithological interest, as a migratory stopover or wintering area for many bird species. Different species of herons (grey heron, cattle egret, black-crowned night heron) have installed their nests in one of the tails of the lake. It is also home to a large number of amphibians (including the Natterjack Toad).
The slopes are occupied by an oak grove-charmaie, where several species of raptors (Eagle booted and Milan royal) and forest bats (Beschein's Murin) reproduce. These woods are also home to numerous beetles that contribute to the production of forest humus by decomposing dead wood.

Although shaped by man, its curves are an integral part of the Gers landscape. By walking along the big dam, in any season, if the climate allows it, you will be able to admire an exceptional panorama on the Pyrenees.
