The gate is in the Piazza del Duomo in Pisa.
The gate was opened in 1562 by the then Duke of Florence Cosimo I de' Medici in the pre-existing medieval walls and is known as the New Gate because it is newer than the original Porta del Leone and Porta Santa Maria as an entrance to the Piazza del Duomo.
During the First World War, a track ran from San Rossore station which, with an opening next to the gate, went directly into the hospital of Santa Chiara to transport the wounded from the front. This opening still exists.
In the 1930s, the two side arches were opened to allow safe passage for pedestrians, given the presence of line 1 of the Pisa tram network, which linked the main station to Piazza Duomo.
