Aquesta és una de les cinc capelles restants de les set que es van construir antigament.
A les primeres dècades del segle XVIII, les cerimònies del Via Crucis a Guimarães, durant la Quaresma, ja estaven organitzades per la Irmandade da Consolação i Santos Passos.
Amb aquesta finalitat es van repartir creus per diferents punts de la ciutat i es va fer la representació dels diferents passos de la Passió de Crist per part d'una figura de Braga, en règim de lloguer. L'any 1726, la Confraria va començar a erigir un camí crucis de granit a diferents punts de la ciutat, format per set petites capelles, farcides de figures de mida natural en fusta pintada.
Originàriament eren set, construïts el 1727, però avui en queden cinc : a Largo do Carmo, Rua de Santa Maria, Largo João Franco, Senhora da Guia (davant del Museu Alberto Sampaio) i Largo da República do Brazil o Campo de Feira. .
