Byen skylder sit navn til Hain, tidligere kaldet la Braine, en flod der løber gennem kommunen fra øst til vest, og det feudale slot, som i dag er blevet ødelagt, bygget på to forsvarsmotter. Det nuværende slot beliggende langs Hain blev bygget senere. Braine-Le-Château er en middelalderlandsby, hvor flere vidner om det middelalderlige landsbyliv stadig findes:
