The route that starts at Leesten and leads towards Hoenderloo goes over sandy paths, bike paths, and narrow trails through the forests.
Hoenderloo was established in the year 1839 through the efforts of Pastor Heldring. Until that time, it consisted merely of a number of scattered Plaggenhütten at sand drifts and heath areas. Heldring had a well, a school, and a few years later the Heldring Church built there.
In 1851, the precursor to the current Hoenderloo Group was also established, at that time an institution for underprivileged, neglected boys, partly on the initiative of Heldring. In popular terms, it is still referred to as the boys' house, although nowadays it is no longer exclusively for boys.
