Le professeur Colin Maclaurin a reçu en 1744 une question particulière de deux prêtres presbytériens qui luttaient avec une question statistique : Alexander Webster et Robert Wallace. Ils voulaient estimer combien de prêtres mourraient chaque année. Ils avaient besoin de ce chiffre car ils souhaitaient établir un fonds de pension pour les veuves de leurs prêtres et parce qu'ils voulaient déterminer combien de cotisations devraient être versées par personne et par an. Cela est devenu la base d'une nouvelle branche des mathématiques : la statistique. Selon leurs calculs, il aurait dû y avoir 58 348 livres dans leur fonds en 1765. Manquant 1 livre, ils avaient exactement raison.
