Le 14 mai 1940, le 3ème plus grand bombardement urbain allemand de la Luftwaffe a eu lieu à Rotterdam. Guernica en Espagne et Varsovie en Pologne avaient déjà eu lieu auparavant. La majeure partie du centre-ville a été détruite et 900 personnes ont été tuées. Le général néerlandais Henri Winkelman s'est rendu après 5 jours.
