The original church dates from an ancient hermitage documented since the 18th century under the invocation of Our Lady of Hope and later Our Lady of Mount Carmel.
The current appearance is the result of a renovation at the beginning of the 19th century, when the volume was enlarged.
The church and the tower of the original medieval enclosure coexisted until the mid-19th century, when the latter was demolished, giving rise to the name "Igreja de Santo António da Torre Velha" (Church of Saint Anthony of the Old Tower).
The Church of Saint Anthony is a building on top of an old hermitage that was expanded in the 19th century and given the name by which it is known today.
The bell tower , built after construction works in the 19th century, is notable for its height and the presence of gargoyles in each corner.
