Sotto il regno di Filippo II, il corregidor di Cordovan ordinò la costruzione di una fontana per migliorare l'approvvigionamento idrico del distretto .
Costruita nel 1577 , fu coronata un secolo dopo dal grazioso puledro che la cavalcava. Originariamente sorgeva dove ora sorge il Trionfo di San Raffaele , ma fu spostata nell'attuale sede nel 1847. Sembra che il nome di questa piazza e della fontana derivi dal cavallino , e si ipotizza anche che prendesse il nome dal locanda omonima.
