Il Ducato di Urbino fu annesso come provincia allo Stato Pontificio dopo la morte dell'ultimo Duca Francesco Maria II della Rovere nel 1625. Di conseguenza, il Palazzo Ducale di Pesaro fu residenza del Cardinale Legato Luigi Homodei nel 1655. Ricevette la Regina Cristina di Svezia durante il suo viaggio a Roma. Oggi il palazzo è utilizzato come municipio principale.
