Het New Forest is een van de grootste overgebleven stukken niet-omheind weiland , heide en bos in Zuid-Engeland , en strekt zich uit over zuidwest Hampshire en zuidoost Wiltshire .
Het werd uitgeroepen tot koninklijk bos door Willem de Veroveraar , te zien in het Domesday Book . Reeds bestaande rechten van gemeenschappelijk grasland worden nog steeds erkend en worden door officiële aanhangers afgedwongen. In de 18e eeuw werd The New Forest een bron van hout voor de Koninklijke Marine . Het blijft een habitat voor veel zeldzame vogels en zoogdieren.
