Agenturet for Natur og Skov (Vlaamse regering) forvalter omkring 400 hektar af skoven, mens andre dele stadig er under privat forvaltning. En stor del, Maldegemfeltet, forvaltes af Natuurpunt. Drongengoedskoven er kendt for sin store variation af svampe og nathadere. Men også variationen af løv- og nåleskov blandet med fugtige græsarealer og hede formår at tiltrække mange plante- og dyrearter. De mange alléer og rækkefølger af træer er vigtige 'økologiske motorveje', hvor planter og dyr nemt kan migrere. Det er derfor ikke overraskende, at Drongengoed-Maldegemfeltet, inklusive lufthavnen, er beskyttet af Europa.
