Die Smaragde variieren stark in der Farbe, einige dunkelgrün bis hellgrün mit Variationen in Blau/Cyan-Farben. Oft mit vielen Einschlüssen, selten glasklar. Smaragd ist ein Mitglied der Familie der Berylle. Er gehört neben Diamanten, Rubinen und Saphiren zu den traditionellen „großen Vier“ Edelsteinen. Das Wort „Smaragd“ stammt aus dem Altgriechischen: σμάραγδος (smáragdos; „grüner Edelstein“).
