Machelen wurde erstmals 697, 820 und 830 in den Annalen der St. Petersabtei in Gent erwähnt . Es war unter anderem als Machlinio bekannt, was mächtig bedeutete.
Der Dorfkern mit Kirche entstand nahe der Leie, auf einer Anhöhe an der rechten Außenkurve, „Machelen-put“ genannt.
Es liegt malerisch an einem ungenutzten Arm der Leie. Der Brunnen war fast zugeschüttet . Das konnte unter anderem dank Roger Raveel verhindert werden, einem in Machelen geborenen und aufgewachsenen Künstler. Seit 1999 hat der Maler in seinem Heimatdorf ein eigenes Museum .
Jedes Jahr findet am Samstag des 1. Septemberwochenendes am Machelen Put ein Wannentanz statt.
