El cronista de la reina Cristina, Priorato, cuenta que pasó una noche en el castillo real de Jönköping durante su viaje al sur después de su abdicación en 1654. El castillo se quemó en 1737 y nunca fue reconstruido. Las ruinas fueron limpiadas en el siglo XIX. La historia de la fortificación y del castillo se presenta en el cercano Museo Jönköping Läns en Slottsgatan. (Grabado del siglo XVII de Erik Dahlberg).
