Stans è una città svizzera, capoluogo del Canton Nidvaldo.
Il comune si trova sul Lago dei Quattro Cantoni.
Il comune ha una popolazione di 7353 abitanti (dicembre 2003), si trova ad un'altitudine di 452 metri s.l.m. e copre 1108 ettari (11,08 km¦).
Il nome Stans si trova per la prima volta in letteratura nel 1172. Nel 1798 fu attaccata dalle truppe francesi, dopo che Nidvaldo aveva scelto una religione diversa.
La Landsgemeinde, l'incontro annuale per le decisioni politiche e l'elezione del governo del cantone, si è tenuta l'ultima volta a Stans nel 1997.
