Il nome deriva dal latino monticulus, propriamente monticello o piccolo monte.
Il suffisso "Maggiore" è stato aggiunto per distinguerlo da altri comuni o località con lo stesso toponimo, tra i quali il poco distante Montecchio Precalcino.
