Il castello risale originariamente al tredicesimo secolo. Il primo castello fu distrutto nel sedicesimo secolo e ricostruito nel 1594. Nel 1634 la casa allora disabitata cadde preda di una banda di avventurieri guidati da Theodoor Cauwenberg, che resero la regione insicura. Le truppe di Liegi e Aquisgrana assediarono quindi il castello e lo smantellarono. Nel 1833 i resti furono abbattuti fino a ottenere un plateau, su cui fu costruito l'attuale castello. Nel 1880 il castello fu ampliato.
