De Thames Tunnel werd gegraven in 1825. Het was de eerste keer dat ingenieurs een tunnel maakten onder een grote rivier. Het idee hoe de wanden te verstevigen is gebaseerd op de techniek van de paalworm. Dat beestje is een meester in gangen graven. Ingenieur Brunel bestudeerde de paalworm. Naarmate de paalworm groeit (hij kan enkele tientallen centimeters lang worden), wordt de gang verder uitgeboord waardoor deze langer wordt. De wanden van de boorgang worden met een kalklaagje bedekt. En die techniek werd door Brunel nagebootst. Een prachtig voorbeeld van biomimicry.
