Julian Paul Assange is een Australische journalist, programmeur (voormalige hacker) en internetactivist, bekend van de oprichting van WikiLeaks, een klokkenluiderwebsite. Assange verbleef sinds juni 2012 in de Ecuadoriaanse ambassade in Londen. Op 16 augustus 2012 maakte de president van Ecuador bekend dat hij politiek asiel kreeg. Groot-Brittannië stond hem echter niet toe naar dat land te vertrekken.
