Wist je dat elke curling steen ooit gebruikt in de Olympische Spelen afkomstig is van dit kleine eiland: Ailsa Craig. Het ligt 16 km ten westen van het vasteland van Schotland. Het heeft de perfecte graniet om de impact onder curlingomstandigheden te weerstaan. De meeste ganiet is te kwartsrijk. Dit eiland is ook bekend als Paddy's Milestone. Het eiland is een vulkanische plug. Een vulkanische plug of vulkanische prop is gestolde lava die is ontstaan in de pijp van een actieve vulkaan. Nadat de vulkaan is gedoofd kan het omliggende gesteente, de vulkaankegel, door erosie verdwijnen. Als de plug bewaard is gebleven ontstaat de karakteristieke aardvorm.
