Francesco Carrara (born in Lucca on September 18, 1805, died in Lucca on January 15, 1888) is an Italian lawyer and politician.
He graduated in jurisprudence from the University of Lucca. He was professor of criminal law at the University of Lucca (1848 - 1859), then professor of criminal law at the University of Pisa (1860).
Francesco Carrara was elected deputy (865-1870), then senator (1876), and finally appointed to the Supreme Council of Public Instruction (1881-1886). He calls for the abolition of the death penalty.
He is a member of the National Academy of Sciences, Letters and Arts in Modena (1872), corresponding member of the Lombard Institute of Sciences and Letters in Milan (1873), national member of the Academy of Lincei in Rome (1875).
As a lawyer, he is the author of several books, including Fundamental Principles of the Italian Criminal School (1876).
