Land of wood, stone, and water Vielsalm, a land of wood, stone, and water, offers you beautiful landscapes and a diverse nature: the peat bogs of the plateau des Tailles, the great forest of Bêchefa, the swamps of Commanster, the stunning view from the Bec du Corbeau, the Doyards lake, or the wide valleys of Grand-Halleux and Petit-Thier. In its 23 villages and hamlets, you will discover an architecture style in schist, arkose, and slate. This hiking trail will lead you through very varied landscapes. Right from the start, you will be face to face with the slate quarries of Cahay. During the entire walk, you will see the typical roofs of the Ardennes houses, many of which are still made of slate. The window and door frames are often made of fyllade. When the rock does not have a nice layer to make slate from, it was used as a building stone. After that, you walk through the forest. You have a beautiful view of the valley below. Be sure not to miss the remarkable little hills as you walk along the Bêche brook. These stacked stones are the remnants of the piles of gravel from the gold diggers who were searching for pieces of gold, a popular pastime in this region.
