Regional nature park of the Auvergne volcanoes

Auvergne Volcanoes Park is a French regional nature park, established on October 25, 1977. It is located in the heart of the Massif Central, in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes administrative region. With an area of 389,733 ha, it is the largest regional nature park on mainland France.

Located in the heart of the Auvergne, the park that extends 120 km from north to south across the two departments of Cantal and Puy-de-Dôme, consists of 147 municipalities that in 2005 attracted around 90,000 inhabitants1. The height oscillates between 400 and 1,886 meters.

The regional park comprises five natural regions.

Of the natural areas there are 4 volcanic massifs:

The mountains of Cantal (ahead of Cantal 1 855 m)
The Cézallier (Luguet signal 1 551 m)
The dome mountains (puy de Dôme 1 465 m)
The Dore mountains (Puy de Sancy 1,886 m)
and 1 granite plateau:

the Artense (around 800 m).
The Cantal massif is a single old volcanic building (between three million years and two hundred and fifty thousand years old) with a 150 km tower eroded by twelve or thirteen glacial valleys that converge toward the three main peaks: Puy Griou, which is the old fireplace, the Puy Mary and the Plomb du Cantal. It is a country with hot springs and lakes. The man worked tirelessly to shape his living environment, graze barren slopes and build volcanic lava with villages, castles, burons and Romanesque churches.

Very different in appearance, the panorama of the Puys chain spreads a swarm of cones and wooded domes. A total of 80 volcanoes of more recent origin (between twelve thousand and seven thousand years).
