Castle monument

This castle monument is a reminder of the moated castle that was occupied by Philip the Good at the Battle of Gavere.
This famous battle of Gevere was fought on 23 July 1453 on the wide high coulters and in the meadows of Semmerzake. It was the last major military encounter between the rebellious city of Ghent and its sovereign.
The authoritarian Duke Philip, was not so 'Good' this time. The castle of Gavere, base of operations for the Ghent shock troops, was captured by the Burgundians. 15,000 Ghent warriors were killed by treachery or misfortune during the battle. A Ghent squad of about 1000 men braved the enemy stampede for hours, but they too were slaughtered to the last man. Their heroic defence, however, undoubtedly saved Ghent from plunder and total ruin. The Battle of Gavere can therefore be called a milestone in the history of Flanders.
