The Meuse-Moselle Canal was never completed. Originally it was conceived as the missing link between the Meuse and Moselle Rivers. A 2.5-kilometre channel tunnel had to be dug through a granite and slate hill, on the Belgian-Luxembourg border. The tunnel was supposed to end in Hoffelt. The works stopped around the 1,130-metre mark, as a result of the prohibitive cost and the political instability after the Belgian Revolution.
