Er entspringt auf der Hebalm im Filzmoos, bei der Freiländer Alm im Hebalmgebiet im Mittelteil der Koralpe. Er fließt am Ursprung zunächst Richtung Westen, danach halbkreisförmig und steil bergab nach Osten bis zur Einmündung in die Laßnitz. Mittel- und Unterlauf bilden die Grenze zwischen den ehemaligen Gemeinden Osterwitz und Kloster.
