Aalst ist eine belgische Stadt mit 87.332 Einwohnern , die im Niederländischen Aalstenaars genannt wird. Sie befindet sich etwa 24 Kilometer nordwestlich von Brüssel in der Denderstreek in der Provinz Ostflandern und ist Verwaltungssitz des Arrondissements Aalst.Das ehemalige Rathaus der Stadt, dessen Belfried ein 52-Glocken-Carillon enthält, wurde Anfang des 13. Jahrhunderts erbaut und ist das älteste Belgiens. 1473 gründete Dirk Martens in Aalst die erste Buchdruckerei der Niederlande. Die Stadt fiel 1667 während des Devolutionskriegs zusammen mit Südflandern an Frankreich und wurde während der beiden Weltkriege von deutschen Truppen besetzt.
