Gegründet wurde der Loro Parque in den 1970er-Jahren von dem aus Köln stammenden und damals 33 Jahre alten Wolfgang Kiessling und seinem Vater. Am 17. Dezember 1972 wurde der Loro Parque offiziell eröffnet. Er umfasste zu dieser Zeit eine Grundfläche von ca. 13.000 m² und etwa 150 Papageien, außerdem eine Loro-Show.
Er wurde ursprünglich als Papageien-Park angelegt, was ihm auch seinen Namen gab, denn Loro ist das spanische Wort für „Papagei“. Auf der gesamten Fläche wurden über 3000 Palmen gepflanzt. 1984 fand im Loro Parque die erste Papageien-Freiflugschau in Europa statt.
